Celebrate World Bread Day at Sydney's best bakeries

If ever there was a day to go all out on bread, it's World Bread Day on Friday 16 October. And The Grumpy Baker is the place to do just that.

The family-run cult favourite has been baking sourdough using traditional methods and recipes passed down through generations for 24 years, ever since head baker Michael Cthurmer opened the first shop on Oxford Street, Paddington back in 2002.

Today you can find The Grumpy Baker’s delicious range of preservative- and additive-free artisan bread at 10 locations across Sydney and NSW.

That includes bestsellers like the Fig & Walnut Sourdough and Soy Linseed Sourdough, plus fan favourites such as Roast Garlic & Olive Sourdough, Potato Rosemary Sourdough, and Black Russian Rye Sourdough (a denser, darker and tangier loaf than regular rye), as well as light and airy Jerusalem Bagels and fluffy, sweet Challah.

Defying machine automation, each loaf is naturally fermented from starter, individually shaped by hand, and baked on-site fresh every day.

They also bake moreish muffins, pies worth crossing town for, and Spinach & Feta Bourekas, among many other sweets and savouries.

The Grumpy Baker has bakeries in Waverton, Neutral Bay, Potts Point, Bellevue Hill, Vaucluse, Maroubra, two in Sydney CBD (Abercrombie Lane and The Bus Stop on Elizabeth Street), Newcastle, and Bilpin.
