A night of Aussie theatre history awaits with The Elocution of Benjamin Franklin stay and show package

To mark the 50th anniversary of one of Australia’s most significant plays, Hotel Indigo Sydney Potts Point has partnered with Griffin Theatre Company to launch a new Stay & Show package celebrating The Elocution of Benjamin Franklin by steve j. spears.

Available for a limited season from 21 February to 29 March 2026, the package includes two tickets to the production at Griffin Theatre Company’s temporary home* of Belvoir St Theatre, the very stage where the play premiered half a century ago, alongside an overnight stay steeped in culture and character in the heart of Kings Cross.

First staged in 1976 to global acclaim, including winning the OBIE Award for Best Off-Broadway Play, The Elocution of Benjamin Franklin is a dark comedy-tragedy following a closeted gay man named Robert O’Brien who teaches elocution to the residents of his suburban Australian community. By day Robert is a prim and proper member of society, by night he escapes into wigged out fantasies and revels in wearing women’s clothing. Both provocative and unsettling, the play offers a sharp exploration of queerness and persecution that was decades ahead of mainstream conversation.

The original production brought Australian actor Gordon Chater to widespread attention and, 50 years on, the anniversary production sees Simon Burke step into the role that made the play infamous. While many will recognise Burke from Play School, he is also one of Australia’s most accomplished stage performers, with major roles in Les Misérables, Chicago, Mary Poppins and Wicked.

The collaboration with Griffin Theatre Company, one of the country’s most respected homes for new and significant Australian theatre, forms part of Hotel Indigo Sydney Potts Point’s ongoing support of the local arts community.

Tucked behind Sydney’s iconic Coca-Cola sign, Hotel Indigo Sydney Potts Point offers a fitting backdrop for a night of classic Australian storytelling. Drawing inspiration from the neighbourhood’s storied past as a playground for artists, performers and outsiders, the boutique hotel welcomes guests through a red velvet-curtained lobby lined with black-and-white portraits of local performers.

The theatrics continue upstairs across 105 playfully-designed rooms, where neon accents, pink furnishings and thought-provoking artwork nod to Kings Cross’ bohemian and LGBTIQ+ heritage. The hotel is also proudly pet-friendly, welcoming four-legged companions along for stays.

The Elocution of Benjamin Franklin Stay & Show package is available for performances from 21 February to 29 March 2026, and includes overnight accommodation, two CINCiN Bellini cocktails and breakfast for two at Hotel Indigo Sydney Potts Point and two tickets to the production, from $320 per room, per night. Subject to availability. Terms and conditions apply.
